Anonymous: Please give your name if you want credit for your answers. Please note that this answer gives an independent clause (#3); you also need versions that add a phrase and a dependent clause.

2. Although the US election is finally over, the new president won’t take the office over until January 2009.

3. The US election is finally over, and all Americans now can unite with the sense of hope for the better future.

Unfortunately I can't seem to come up with a good sentence that would be a fragment.

Tammy: #1--this is an independent clause; #s 2 and 3--this is an independent clause, and you have changed the original independent clause into a dependent one.

Irena: #1--that's a dependent clause;-)#2--that's an independent clause; #3--I'm not sure why you think you need a fragment. For #3 your need an independent clause.

Tammy: It's a better kick at the cat/can! BUT--#1 although it is grammatically correct, it is factually inaccurate;#2--you have the same answer as before (first clause is independent, and the given independent clause is now part of a dependent clause; #3--check the punctuation needed between two independent clauses.
Richard: Good, but did you realize that the US campaign lasted for almost TWO years!

Veronica,
I am sorry I thought we were just writing sentences to learn how they are to be written properly and I did not realize that the sentences had to be factual.

1. After years of campaigning, the US election is finally over.

2. The US election is finally over but, President Obama has plenty of work still ahead.

3. After years of campaigning the US election is finally over; the majority of americans are happy with their new president.

Tammy: When you are given a factual base, it's better to keep the facts straight;-)Most of the time, you are able to indulge your imagination with these exercises. Your answers are good, but in #2 you have the comma in the wrong place.

Thank you Veronica I shall do that :-)

2. The US election is finally over, but President Obama has plenty of work still ahead.
